The top section of the body takes the form of a semicircle. On this section we apply blue reflective sheeting with the highest degree of reflectance (class 3). The semicircular shape of this section ensures that the light will be reflected as a continuous arc into the dark. The sheeting we use here is a very high performance and extremely durable microprismatic retroreflecting material. Its unique engineering provides for high-quality reflective properties to handle the difficult light conditions found in road traffic situations. The sheeting is made of an isotropic material whose prism surfaces are oriented in different directions. This intelligent orientation in all directions means that the reflection will be of uniform quality no matter where the animal viewing it is standing.
The body of the Multiwarn Wildlife Protector unites its various functions within a single assembly. Its transparency allows the maximum passage of the light emitted by an approaching vehicle into the dark. Short-wave blue light is the brightest and most intensive light that wild animals perceive, which is why the transparent body is given a slight blue tint. To the animals, the body appears to illuminate blue.
To achieve 180-degree illumination, four blue-colored light guides are integrated into the body in prism form. These light guides serve to pass even more incident light into the dark.
A wildlife repellent can be added to a sponge found in the upper section of the body. A gap between the roadside guide post and the body makes it easy to add wildlife repellent and ensures good dispersion of the odor. The odor repellent can be specifically used during high-risk times of the year, such as during the various mating and breeding seasons, to create a “fence of smell” as a further means for keeping wildlife away from the road. This method can also be used effectively by farmers and forest workers.
The innovation at the heart of these reflectors is that they produce flashes of light that arouse the attention of wildlife. Animals perceive the constantly shifting pattern as movement. The idea is to exploit the animals’ highly honed perception of and response to any movement. The time that wildlife take to stop and investigate the flashing lights gives drivers the decisive seconds they need to pass safely. The reflectors have a raised honeycomb design with reflecting surfaces placed at different angles. To further increase effectiveness, the backs of the reflectors are provided with a mirror coating. Each reflector can produce up to 156 unique flashes of light.
So that animals do not habituate and stop responding to a particular color, the reflectors are given colors that cover the full spectrum visible to wildlife. In addition, the colored reflectors are placed in the body in varying arrangements. This means that a unique and ever-changing color pattern is produced by each Multiwarn Wildlife Protector. An animal standing near a stretch of road equipped with Multiwarn Wildlife Protectors will therefore see continuously changing patterns of moving light.
The product is made from a weather-resistant and UV-stable plastic material. This material is already being used for various applications in the field of automotive production.
The assembly is designed to be maintenance free. The only work required is the manual replenishment of repellent (if used). Cleaning by municipal road crews is facilitated by the product’s slim profile and the durable plastic that is resistant to cleaning agents. A Multiwarn Wildlife Protector will of course always perform best when clean.
The Multiwarn Wildlife Protector was designed to satisfy all the geometric and weight requirements stipulated by road traffic regulations. The assembly was made slim enough to ensure that Multiwarn Wildlife Protectors are hardly noticeable to passing drivers, thus ruling out any possible disruption to road users. In fact, the little that drivers do notice out of the corner of their eyes is enough to warn them that they have entered a wildlife crossing area.
A multifunctional wildlife warning and protection system that combines a number of effective methods for keeping wildlife from crossing the road.
The Multiwarn Wildlife Protector acts like a crossing light for animals. It switches to “BLUE” when cars approach to prevent wildlife from crossing the road.
Our Multiwarn Wildlife Protector combines various functions within a single product. This makes it possible to increase the typical effective warning radius by five fold to 180° and optionally even further to 360°.
